The Bedtime Water Negotiations
Bedtime is a strange thing.
All day, a child can walk past a glass of water as if it is an ordinary object.
But the moment the lights go out, water becomes urgent.
Not just any water.
Fresh water.
In the right cup.
Delivered with care.
And just when you think everyone is finally settled, a small voice appears from the darkness.
“I need to tell you something.”
This is usually followed by an important announcement about a toy, a dream, a bug seen three days ago, or a question so unexpected it makes you wonder what has been going on in that little mind all evening.
You try to stay calm.
You remind yourself this is connection.
You also remind yourself that you have been trying to get to the couch for forty-five minutes.
Family life is full of these little bedtime negotiations.
One more cuddle.
One more story.
One more sip.
One more question.
And somehow, tucked inside all the delay tactics, there is something beautiful.
A child wanting closeness.
A parent trying again.
A home slowly settling for the night.
It may not be the peaceful bedtime scene from the parenting books.
But it is real.
And sometimes, real is better than perfect.
The day does not have to end perfectly to have been full of love.
