The Shoe That Was Definitely Right There
There is a special moment in family life when everyone is finally ready to leave the house.
The bag is packed.
The water bottles are filled.
Someone has used the toilet.
Someone else has decided they no longer likes bananas, but that can be discussed later.
You are almost at the door.
Then it happens.
“Where is my shoe?”
Not both shoes.
Just one.
One shoe is sitting proudly by the door, ready for life.
The other has vanished into the hidden world of family mystery.
Everyone starts searching.
Under the couch.
Behind the door.
Inside the toy basket.
In the bathroom, for reasons no one can explain.
Your child is very sure they left it “right there,” which could mean anywhere within a three-room radius.
And somehow, just when you are about to give up, the shoe appears in the most unexpected place.
Beside a stuffed dinosaur.
Inside a laundry basket.
Under a cushion.
Waiting quietly, as if it had done nothing wrong.
These little moments can test a parent’s patience.
But they also become the stories families laugh about later.
Because family life is not always smooth.
It is socks, shoes, crumbs, questions, delays, and small mysteries before breakfast.
And somewhere in all of that, there is love.
Not perfect love.
Real love.
The kind that keeps looking for the shoe.
A family does not need to leave on time every time to still be moving forward together.
